Eerie Bird Superstitions

As I was crawling out of bed a couple of mornings ago I was surprised that a bird flew right up and landed on the windowsill outside. It looked to be the very largest, fattest blue jay I have ever seen. It looked in at me and tapped three times on the window with its beak. It sat looking puzzled for a few more seconds and flew away. I was awestruck. What a beautiful sight it was. I was able to see that lovely bird up close for those few seconds. I sat on the edge of my bed absorbing the wonder of it all. Then I began to wonder. All my life I had been hearing superstitions about birds. And I have had more than my share of experiences with birds. When I was in high school some friends and I were skipping school. As we came out of a building downtown I looked up to see what the weather was like. I was bird-bombed right between the eyes! While out driving the other day I saw the biggest flock of birds I have ever seen. There were hundreds, maybe more than a thousand of them. O...

Strange Superstitions About Feathers

My granddaughter is constantly finding feathers. When she was small I repeated to her what I had been told, that when you find a feather, it means that someone who died is thinking of you. She often finds them in groups of three. She is certain that they are from her great-grandmother and two great aunts. They were very important to her and now she feels that they watch over her. This is a superstition, right? What if it isn't? I began to

Sky is something a part of nature that's always there for us. It's not like it will ever just fall or something, will it? Calm down, Chicken Little.

Why Do Roses Have Thorns?

Roses are some of the most beautiful and sought after flowers. You can quickly pick most kinds of flowers and take a big smell and feel good for a little while after. But if you try that with a rose you might just get a finger pricked with one of its thorns. Maybe our first reaction is that it's such a shame that roses have thorns that could hurt us this way. Why do they have to do that? All we really wanted to do was pick them and love them and then watch them slowly die. Why would a such a beautiful rose take offense to that? Okay, let's get serious. Why do roses really have thorns? Is there a big secret behind this, or is the answer so obvious it might just poke us right in the nose? Let's examine the answer to these questions just a bit. Roses happen to be beautiful to look at, fragrant to smell, and sweet to taste. All of that would most likely attract all sorts of creatures great and small, right? Right! So, all of these differently sized creatures would obvio...

Ten Questions: Florida Monkey Squirrels

Have you ever heard of a monkey squirrel? Sometimes they are called monkey face squirrel. No? Most of you haven't, but many people who live in Florida know of the monkey squirrel.
