Sandhill Crane

As you may have noticed, this bird is not a turkey! Thanksgiving is over and I don't have any photos of turkeys yet anyway. This Sandhill Crane is a much bigger bird than a turkey. It stands as tall as a grown man, and it lives very close to the same area as I do. You may find this surprising, but the city of Detroit is only a half hour drive away.

We think of cities as places where wild animals don't exist, except for maybe the odd squirrel or pigeon. But if you look in the quiet corners or greener areas, you will find them teeming with life. And sometimes that life can be every bit as big as an adult human. If we are careful, we can witness it for ourselves. This Sandhill crane is a very good example of that.

Rat Tales is where I get to share some of the fiction that I write. No photos there though, just some very cool stories.

  1. During migration they almost look like stalks of corn from afar along the Platte in Grand Island, NE. It is phenomenal to enjoy seeing thousands of them.

  4. We used to see them out in the fields where I grew up. It's so true that a lot of nature and wildlife gets over looked and can be found in unexpected places.
