The First Snowfall

The first snowfall of winter is always a magical thing. Kids, and even some smarter adults, run outside to experience the falling snow all around them. We know that the first snow is the sign of big changes ahead. This first sign of winter carries an excitement that no other season can really match. No other season has such a definite signal that tells us it is coming.

The First Snowfall
by James Russell Lowell, 1819-1891

The snow had begun in the gloaming,
And busily all the night
Had been heaping field and highway
With a silence deep and white.

Every pine and fir and hemlock
Wore ermine too dear for an earl,
And the poorest twig on the elm tree
Was ridged inch deep with pearl.

  1. Great poem, one I haven't heard before. Hopefully we'll have some snow soon :-)

  2. After the rain washed away our first snow , I felt a little disappointed. But today it began again. It's wonderful how just like the poet says ,the world becomes a breathtaking sight.

It's a new one to me too. Many of these poems I find are things I've never read before that moment. We've already had our first snowfall here, and we're expecting our second very soon.

Our first snowfall is still here. Some people thought it might melt away, but I think it's going to stay.

  4. No snow for us yet...though there have been a few flurries in other parts of the country. I do like the snow when it is falling and fresh...but I hate it as it gets dirty and turns to slush!!

I agree completely about the slush. And the snow is always okay until it gets too deep and the weather gets too cold.
