Crows Declare War

Recently, Ratty posted a series of videos about the intelligence of crows. The link I just provided is for the first of 6 videos. If you haven't watched them, you should. They are interesting. The reason I mention the videos is a news article I read about crows.

It seems that there is a problem in Everett, Washington. The crows have declared war on the police department.

A police precinct in Everett is under attack. The parking lot seems to be the main war-ground. Crows are dive-bombing officers who are going to and from their cars.

One officer who was attacked turned on the siren of his car to scare the birds away. He was rewarded with bird droppings all over his squad car.

Some other city workers have also had encounters with the angry birds. A few say they were attacked too.

A Washington State Fish and Wildlife Conservation Department spokesperson said that she believes the attacks may be because young crows are learning to fly and the adults are protecting them.

We learned in the videos that crows have strong memories. They can recognize people that they perceive a threats. It was pointed out by the conservation department spokesperson that crows also hold grudges.

City employees have been instructed to leave the crows alone as much as possible. They will be allowed to carry umbrellas as protection. What I want to know is: are the umbrellas to fend off the crows or simply protect from the bombs the crows are dropping?

  1. This is funny and interesting. It had to be a little scary to be dive bombed or bombed by Crows.
