A Seahorse Giving Birth

Seahorses are one of the strangest looking fish in existence. But they remind us humans so much of the well known horses that we are so familiar with that we have named these interesting little creatures after them. Many of us are fascinated by seahorses, but we never think of how one would give birth.

Did you know that it is the male seahorse that actually gives birth? When mating, the female deposits her eggs into the male's brood pouch, where he carries the eggs for 9 to 45 days until they emerge. Our video for this week shows the birth of several seahorse babies from one particular type of seahorse. You might want to mute the sound on this one though. It is humorously bad, and it has nothing to do with the video. Otherwise, this is maybe the most interesting seahorse video I've found. Now let's take a look...

  1. They are incredibly cute...incubating in a pouch kind of reminds me of a kangaroo!! It's nice to see a male of the species doing the work for a change...lol

I didn't get the dialogue so i turned it off like you suggested...this made the video much better!!

I thought of a kangaroo too. It made me wonder why they didn't call them sea kangaroos. They even look like them as much as they do horses.
