Fair Today

This week's Cool Nature Video isn't what you might consider to be strictly a nature video, although it technically is about a subject that is definitely nature related, agriculture. This video is an old cartoon from 1941, by Walter Lantz, called "Fair Today". It takes us on a very humorous tour through a county fair.

A county fair, for those of you who don't know, is a special event for a surrounding local area that lasts for several days, and is held usually once a year. It's an outdoor event that usually celebrates the area's agricultural community. You can usually find the products from farms, such as vegetables and livestock, and demonstrations of both. There's also usually a carnival included with the rest of the exhibits. A lot of that is more about nature than most of us usually experience. Actually, the cartoon does a pretty good job demonstrating what a county fair is all about, so let's talk about the video.

They used to show these short cartoons on TV when I was a kid, every weekday when I got home from school. The ones like this were shown on the Woody Woodpecker Show, along with Chilly Willy the Penguin, and Droopy Dog. Woody was the first woodpecker I ever saw. The great thing is that a lot of these cartoons can be found on the internet. This one has always been one of my favorites.

  1. I have been to what I would consider a 'proper' country fair in such a long time. I think these days the real reason they were put on has been lost along the way and it all seems to be about commercialism now. It would do local businesses good if they could make a comeback!!

Oh and i enjoyed the cartoon!!
